How to Find Out If You Qualify for Section 8

Mar 17, 2026

Millions of Americans apply for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers each year, but not everyone qualifies. Understanding the eligibility rules before you apply can save time and set realistic expectations for the process.

Income Limits

The primary Section 8 eligibility requirement is income. Your household's gross annual income must typically be at or below 50% of the Area Median Income for your area and household size. By law, PHAs must serve at least 75% of new voucher holders from households at or below 30% AMI.

Income is calculated broadly — it includes wages, salaries, tips, Social Security and SSI, child support, alimony, and most other regular income sources. Some deductions may apply (elderly/disabled, dependents).

Citizenship and Immigration

At least one household member must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen (such as a legal permanent resident). Mixed-status households can still receive prorated assistance based on the number of eligible members.

Background and Prior Tenancy

PHAs screen applicants for criminal history and prior housing authority records. Drug-related crimes, violent crimes, and certain sex offenses can disqualify applicants. Prior evictions from assisted housing can also affect eligibility.
